Court proceedings are closed for the second day in protest against the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chittagong. There was no hearing in the 74 courts of Chittagong on Thursday. In the morning, the flag of the District Bar Association was kept at half-mast. Lawyers protested by holding black badges.
The organizations of former students of the law department of private universities formed a human chain in the court premises demanding the arrest and hanging of the accused of murdering the lawyer. These include International Islamic University, Premier University, Southern University, Port City International University. They want the execution of lawyer Saiful's killers in human chains. They made a human chain from 12.30 pm to 1.00 pm. Apart from this, various organizations including the Nationalist Lawyers Forum also formed a human chain in the court premises.
Chittagong District Lawyers Association President Nazim Uddin Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that the lawyers are protesting the killing by holding black badges. After the Zohar prayer, prayers were offered for the soul of the slain lawyer Saiful Islam at the Court Hill Mosque.
It can be seen on the surface, the lawyers are saddened by the loss of their colleagues. A few lawyers can be heard chanting in front of Sonali Bank in the court premises. One of them is Moinul Islam. He told Prothom Alo that on the day of the incident, the followers of Chinmoy Das vandalized his motorcycle kept in the court premises on Tuesday. Saiful regretted knowing this. Later, he took part in a march to protest against attacks and vandalism and was killed.
City Police Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) ANM Humayun Kabir told Prothom Alo today that no case is being heard as all activities of Chittagong Court are closed. The cases are being kept for a later date. The litigants did not come to the court after knowing in advance that it was closed for the second day. But some people came back.
